About Cinnabar.
Cinnabar is the bright scarlet to brick-red form of mercury(II) sulfide (HgS).
It is the most common source ore for refining elemental mercury and is the historic source for the brilliant red or scarlet pigment termed vermilion and associated red mercury pigments.
So it seemed like a great name for a website about art and artists. After all, most artists spend decades refining the ore of their creative ability into a substance that reflects its observer.
About the team.
Lawrence Lee
Lawrence has been designing websites since 1995 when he was hired to create a commercial website for two of the scientists who lived in Biosphere II.
Since then he has created over a dozen sites for various businesses and individuals ranging from a Guatemalan B&B to a business selling children’s books.
“I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain. I have known love and loss in near equal measure. I am interested in almost everything, but have a special fondness for language and subatomic physics. I continue to paint.” - Lawrence Lee
Having lived the majority of his life in Tucson, Arizona and attended college at Northern Arizona University, Lawrence Lee has had decades to cultivate his familiarity with Navajo and Hopi culture.
A full-time professional artist since 1979, Lee is known for his distinctive shamanistic imagery. Painting from his studio in Arizona, Lee’s work features the colors and themes of the American Southwest in all its mystery and magic. “I am intrigued by the creative things that issue forth from my mind and hand, and I want to see what comes next. And, finally, I am motivated by the thought that I have still not become the best artist that I can be.”
As a boy, Lee spent a lot of time outside hiking, and later, countless hours driving around the Southwest with his eyes on the mountains and clouds. With this expanse of sky and distant horizons “baked into” him, and possessing a sense of place that is hugely important to him, he now prefers the studio to wide-open spaces. “None of my landscapes are of real places-other than that they must be close by where my shamans live. Call them “unearned memories” that live within me and come to life only when I paint.”
